Always follow the instructions provided with the abrasive products and the machines using them.

Ensure that the abrasive product is suitable for its intended use.

Check for any damage or defects on abrasive products before installation.

Follow the correct procedures for handling and storing abrasive products.

Be aware of the potential risks associated with the use of abrasive products and follow the recommended precautions for:

Physical contact with the abrasive product, considering its operating speed.

Accidents resulting from the breakage of the abrasive product during use.

Grinding fragments, sparks, fumes and dust generated during the operation.

Noise

Vibrations

Use only abrasive products that comply with the highest safety standards. The following EN standards provide the essential safety requirements for the respective abrasive products:

EN 13236 for superabrasive products.

Never use a machine that is not in good working condition or that has defective parts.

Employers must assess the risks of all processes involving abrasive products in order to determine the appropriate protective measures required. They must also ensure that their workers are properly trained to perform their tasks.

PRECAUTIONS AGAINST POTENTIAL HAZARDS

Physical contact with the abrasive product

Always exercise extreme caution when using abrasive products. Tie back long hair and avoid wearing loose clothing ties, or jewellery.

Avoid accidental start-up of the machine before mounting or during the replacement of the abrasive product. Isolate the machine from the power supply if necessary.

Never remove the safety guards installed on the machines. Ensure the guards are intact and properly positioned before starting the machine.

Always wear appropriate gloves and clothing if the workpiece or machine needs to be held by hand. For gloves, a minimum protection level of EN 388 Category 2 is recommended.

After stopping the machine, ensure that the abrasive product has come to a complete stop before leaving the machine unattended.

Accidents caused by the breakage of the abrasive product

Always handle abrasive products with great care, as they can easily be damaged. Always inspect all products before use to check for any damage or defects.

Store abrasive products in a dry environment, protected from frost and avoid large temperature fluctuations. Ensure they are properly protected and stored to prevent damage and deformation.

Flexible abrasives should be stored at a temperature of 18-22°C with a relative humidity of 45-65%.

Check any other warnings or safety information indicated on the product or packaging:

Never use an abrasive past its expiry date, if indicated on the product. Observe the recommended storage shelf life for the following products:

3 years for resin-bonded and shellac abrasives; 5 years for rubber-based products; 10 years for vitrified products.
